book cover image Candy Barr

Born Juanita Slusher in Edna, Texas, in 1935, the entertainer who became Candy Barr was perhaps the last great dancer in burlesque, a stripper who insisted on live, improvisational music and who at one time commanded $2,000 a week in 1950s Las Vegas. But as Juanita she had started life as a prematurely well-developed thirteen-year-old runaway victimized by a Dallas ritual known as "the capture" that enslaved her into prostitution, for a time turning over 4,000 tricks a year before she was able to escape. A lover of Mickey Cohen's and friend to Jack Ruby, Barr's tumultuous life included a period of imprisonment on trumped-up drug charges, an appearance in a crude, 20-minute stag film, and unlikely role in the investigation into the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Based on over 100 hours of exclusive interviews with Barr, this book is not just the story of Juanita and Candy, but also paints an unflattering picture of all those who sought to exploit her.

book cover image Outrageous Texans

When scandalous Texas tornado Miss "Texas" Guinan tried to take her burlesque review into Paris--France not Texas--the censors refused her entry into the country. She and her troupe of "30 really ravishing blondes" had performed their show for the entertainment of the passengers and crew of the steamship Paris in exchange for their passage across the Atlantic. The dance that drew the most attention featured the girls dancing nude except for high heels and two large fans, one held behind the back and one held over the front with the occasional fan closing "accidentally." Disappointed but not defeated, Miss Guinan chose to spin the refusal to her advantage. Her sexy revue would have a new name with implications that would ensure its success--she boasted that her show was so titillating that it was named "Too Hot for Paris." That got everyone's attention!

Miss Texas Guinan is just one of many larger-than-life personalities profiled in Outrageous Texans: Tales of the Rich and Infamous. From Janis Joplin to Racehorse Haynes and Jane Crawford to Kinky Friedman, Mona D. Sizer brings all of these colorful characters from the Lone Star State to life. Outrageous Texans: Tales of the Rich and Infamous profiles ten larger-than-life personalities who either hailed from the Lone Star State or made their mark there. book cover image Shingles

Up to twenty percent of the population is affected at some time in their lives by shingles, officially known as herpes zoster. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox. It attacks adults who had chickenpox as children but whose immune system has weakened due to increasing age, illness, drugs, radiation therapy, or even physical or emotional stress.

For many people shingles is a temporary condition, which starts at a nerve root and moves to the skin, causing a burning pain, rash, and blisters, all subsiding within a few weeks. But almost a third of those 850,000 Americans who suffer from shingles each year are further afflicted with a painful complication called post-herpetic neuralgia, or PHN, which can continue for months of even years. Other potential complications of shingles include inflammation of the eye, which can lead to loss of vision.

This book shows the reader how early recognition of shingles, along with the use of the newest antiviral drugs, can hasten recovery from shingles and its complications. Detailing causes, symptoms, treatments, and ways of finding the best care for both shingles and PHN, Shingles also discusses recent developments in preventing shingles through the use of a varicella vaccine.
